ABOUT

I am a writer, teacher, editor, birder, rock climber, and kayaker. I write about the natural world and adventures large and small in the outdoors. My first book My Reach: A Hudson River Memoir explores the Hudson River from the perspective of my kayak and like all of my work meanders through history, natural history, and personal history. My second book, Learning the Birds, will be published in April 2022 with Cornell University Press. I started birding at age 49 and this memoir, which includes bird history and a larger history, follows my first three years of intense birding from the Hudson Valley, to Florida, Arizona, and Alaska. But according to some readers, you don't have to be a birder to enjoy this memoir!
